Category Requests for Read Tuesday

Cover Problems Pic

Now is your chance to submit category requests for Read Tuesday (it’s a Black Friday type of event just for book lovers on December 9, 2014).

Whether you’re a reader or an author, which categories are you looking for?

We’ll be making the submission forms for authors (it’s free) available soon, and we intend to use a drop-down menu for category selection.

You’ll be able to select ONE category (pick the one that’s closest), but you’ll also be able to write in one subcategory.

How many characters do you think will be enough to cover the possible subcategories?

Here is what we’re planning:

First, we’ll divide books into groups, such as 5 & UNDER, 6 TO 9, 10 TO 12, TEEN, GENERAL, and MATURE. If you don’t like this division, here is your chance to suggest alternatives.

Next, we need to list categories. Here are the categories we presently have in mind. Here is your chance to suggest more categories.

Each category needs to have enough books in it to justify its own category, but not so many that it becomes overpopulated. This won’t be easy to predict, but that’s the goal. We can collapse categories together, if their populations are small; the hard thing is opening up new categories after books have already been submitted.

  1. How do you differentiate between 6-9 and 10-12? Also I personally think you have too many fantasy genres. Simplicity can be key here since there can be subgenre overlap and confusion.

    • That’s possible. In my last post, one of the comments asked for fantasy subcategories. Do you think just fantasy would cover it? Or how would you divide it? (I can easily combine these together if the subcategories don’t fill though.)

The age group is a tough call. Last year, we just had children and teen, and we had requests for subdivision. My hope is that it may help parents. Maybe I will just have beginning and ending age ranges and sort them by range. I hadn’t thought of that until now.

  2. I know you’ve got general fantasy in there, but I agree with Charles; I think splitting it up into lots of subgenres sort of makes it more difficult for fantasy writers to fit into the ‘right’ slot. As for mine, I never know whether they’re scifi or fantasy. Or adventures or mysteries. And they’re suitable for 10+ but they aren’t ‘teen’ books. Sigh. 🙂
Thanks for your hard work on this!
